Barrister Alvin Yeung has been unanimously endorsed by the Civic Party’s central committee to stand in February’s Legislative Council by-election, for the seat vacated by former member Ronny Tong. Tong announced in June that he would vacate the seat in the New Territories East constituency, after the government's political reform proposal for the 2017 Chief Executive election was voted down. Tong also announced that he would resign from the Civic Party, which he co-founded. Yeung said he had received the support of the pan-democratic camp, and said he is ready to fight for Hong Kong. He said he had witnessed changes and damage to the city’s core values in recent years, and felt it was his duty to stand up and defend those values.
