Lantau residents protest over plan to open up road
Dozens of Lantau Island residents have staged a rally in Central against the government's proposal to open up South Lantau Road for private vehicles. The Transport Department had earlier announced a plan to allow up to 25 non-residents' private vehicles into South Lantau per day as part of efforts to boost the island’s economy. A spokesperson for the South Lantau Concern Group, Tse Sai-kit, said the government has consulted the Islands District Council, public transport companies and some green groups on the plan, but turned a deaf ear to residents' opposition.
